Digitization Proposal for Cornell On-Campus Eatery

In the fall of 2020, my senior year at Cornell, I took a course called Teams & Technology. In the course we studied the ways modern technology is used to optimize performance in team-based settings in the classroom, at work, and in personal life. The assignment below captures my team’s proposal for an assignment where we were asked to find an opportunity on campus where some aspect of teamwork could be enhanced by new technology. We selected to work with Terrace Restaurant, a campus favorite that has always been plagued with massive lines and huge service delays.

Mobile-order Functionality

Our proposal called for a complete digitization of the food ordering process that up to this point had been entirely in person. We took into account the fact that there were always massive lines at peak lunch times and lulls in between the peak hours which collectively caused significant inefficiencies during the peak hours and wasted time in between. In the picture to the right, you can see a mock-up of a mobile app that allows users to order ahead, monitor estimated wait time, select pick-up times, and process payments. Our pitch allowed for workers to be more efficient in processing orders in real time and allowed consumers to know the best time to order food so they could avoid wasting time waiting in busy lines. Interface designs were made in Adobe Photoshop and Balsamiq Digital Prototyping.
